This Gamble Gardennewborn session in Palo Alto unfolded on one of those warm, golden Fall evenings where everything felt impossibly soft. This little one arrived into this world at just five pounds ~ a delicate beginning to what would become such a beautiful story.
Her grandfather was a painter, and her parents shared with me that even in all her tininess, she is utterly captivated by his work. They are convinced she possesses an innate eye for beauty. I believe them. Throughout our time together, she gazed at the world around her with such curiosity ~ her dark eyes studying light and shadow, her expression thoughtful and serene. There was something almost knowing in the way she looked at everything, as if she were already beginning to understand the artistry of the world unfolding before her.
I arrived early that afternoon to walk the property, see what was in bloom, and to observe how the light fell across the garden. The entire property felt alive with color and fragrance. Parts of the grounds were still closed for a young girl’s birthday celebration that had just wrapped up. A white inflatable ball pit sat centered among the roses, surrounded by pale pink balloons that drifted lazily in the breeze. Music still played softly as little girls in their soft, sorbet-colored party dresses ran about, their laughter echoing through the manicured pathways.
Just beyond the festivities, I met a neighbor walking her sweet rescue, Maisie, through the garden. She had that effortless Nancy Meyers energy about her ~ relaxed rolled jeans, canyon boots, hat, shoulder-length grey hair, sparkly eyes, and the warmest smile. We found ourselves standing together at the tall manicured shrubs framing the property, both peaking over at the whimsical scene. She turned to me and said simply, “It really is pretty, isn’t it?” It truly was. What a gem for neighbors to have access to such a sanctuary!
When the party ended and the garden reopened, we walked inside. This beautiful family soon arrived, walking eagerly toward the entrance ~ Mom, Dad, little one, and Mom’s own lovely mother too! There was such lightness about them … a happiness that today we were going to celebrate their little one.
We began our portraits standing among the cosmos with all their delicate petals swaying around us. I took time with Mom and her own mother first, and then portraits of Mom alone. It felt important to honor this beautiful mother on the heels of welcoming her first child … to see her in this new chapter, not just as little one’s mama, but as herself. She was so calm, so patient, so present. Her little one rested comfortably in their arms throughout, completely at peace.
Dad kept things wonderfully light. He was silly and fun, singing to his daughter and bouncing her gently, clearly having the best time. His joy was infectious, and you could see how much he delighted in his daughter ~ in every tiny sound she made, every little expression that crossed her face!
Baby’s grandma brought such a beautiful presence … she had such kind, knowing eyes. Mom had been eager to include her, sharing how much she had done for them as a family during this tender season. She had mentioned that her mother loves roses (and ah, the roses were in full, glorious bloom that evening), so we made our way to the overflowing white rose garden, where I photographed her cradling her granddaughter. There were so many layers of love on full display … I was so very moved.
We wandered the pathways as the sun began its descent, pausing in pockets of golden light, lingering in the shade of ancient trees. I found myself focusing on all the details that evening … little one’s impossibly tiny hands and feet, her swirls of hair, the way Mom looked at Dad …. and the way he looked back at her. These are the moments that always strike me the most. The quiet glances, the gentle outstretched hands, the way a family holds one another in the earliest days of becoming three. Such kind people. And such a beautiful evening.
I drove away that night feeling so grateful to have been invited into this chapter of their story, to have witnessed the beginning of this little one’s journey through the eyes of those who love her most! ~ Kent Avenue Photography
